Caring for Your Curls

CARING FOR YOUR CURLS

Having bold, curly hair is the envy of many. It’s beautiful, full bodied, and fun. But yes, it’s not as easy to care for. Curly hair is more affected by humidity and tends to be drier than straight hair. Fortunately, there are ways to maintain that gorgeous look. Here are a few tips for caring for curly hair.

SKIP THE SHAMPOO

Have you tried skipping shampoo altogether and opting just for conditioners when washing your curly hair? When you don’t shampoo for a long time or shampoo less frequently, your hair naturally produces cleaning oils that help maintain your texture.

If you’re washing with just conditioner (which usually has a light cleanser in it anyway), you should keep an eye out for silicones. These are harder to wash out without shampoos because they aren’t water soluble and can cause yucky build up.

DRY WITH A T-SHIRT

When you pop out of the shower, instead of using a towel to dry, use a cotton t-shirt instead. Towels will promote frizz and break up your curls, while the cotton in a t-shirt has just as high an absorption rate with less frizz and curl break up.

DIFFUSE THE FRIZZ

When you blow dry your curly hair, use a diffuser attachment on your dryer. This will help to prevent your hair from getting too frizzy and hard to work with. Lightly break up the curls when they’re dry.

You should use your blow dryer on low, and gently scrunch your curls as you work your way from the bottom to the top. Remember to always style your hair only after you’ve patted it dry with a t-shirt, but apply products while it’s still mainly wet.

USE A SERUM OR LOTION

Just a little bit of serum goes a really long way with curly hair. Using a Frizz Control serum helps to seal the cuticle — preventing humidity from getting in and messing up your curls. Redken Ringlet 07 Curl Perfecting Lotion is also great to keep hair under control – just apply it to towel-dried hair.

You should try applying serum such as bHave or leave in conditioners while your hair is still damp right before exercising. Put the product in, put your hair up in a bun and your body heat will open up its full effect. If you use a silicone serum (there are many of them), you’ll need to shampoo once a week or so.

DETANGLE WITHOUT A MESS

Part of your post-wake-up routine will probably include some form of detangling. Switching from a brush to a wide-toothed comb or a Tangle Teezer is great for detangling hair. This is best done in the shower with conditioner still in the hair.
